What's Up with Y'all?

So, last Tuesday I snipped off part of my beard. Then I snipped off some more. Then some more, etc. There's plenty of beard still left, but it's a mere remnant of its former unshorn glory. Here's the surprising thing: NOBODY'S BLOODY SAYING ANYTHING ABOUT IT!

First I thought that they just didn't notice. So I snipped off some more. By now, there's no way you can't tell that my beard has undergone some heavy surgery. So why is everyone pretending that nothing happened? If you have an issue, spit it out. We'll discuss it. Don't just ignore what you don't like. Do I intimidate you? Are you scared of what the answer is going to be?

Fact check: a few people did comment, but these are but a tiny fraction of all those who have seen my partially bearded face.)

UPDATE: So far two people have asked me straight out what's up with the beard or lack thereof. One person has asked, but only after considerable deliberation. We'll keep you posted on this developing story!!

  2. ((Should I be like TRS and respond to every flipping comment, or should I only respond when I have something to add?))

    (((Notice the multiple parens.)))

  3. Maybe you should keep us guessing and randomly switch off.

  4. I knew it all along. You're just looking for attention.

  5. Trs, what meaneth thou? How does this post indicate that I'm looking for attention?

  8. I don't lack the attention. You know good and well that I didn't snip off the beard for attention. I just don't like when people aren't open and honest.

  9. I'm also amazed how people mask their emotions. I'd imagine that my new look is rather shocking for people who aren't expecting it. But nothing on their faces gives the slightest hint that anything unusual has happened.

Moreover, I was discussing my lack of beard with one bochur, and the other bochurim around did not say a word to me about it? Aren't they curious? I know if I saw a guy with a fairly decent reputation suddenly shed his beard, I'd want to get straight to the bottom of it.

  10. Who says you have a fairly-good reputation?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Until very recently, I had a more than fairly good reputation. Remember my former occupation. Certainly that reputation still stood in the minds of many of the people there.

  12. True. Seligson didn't even know you were gone!

  14. When someone I knew trimmed his beard, I obviously noticed, but there was nothing to say. Clearly he felt he looks better with a short beard and he didn't feel it was big deal to cut it.

  15. Should I try changing his mind by making him feel guily?

    ReplyDelete
  16. It's not as simple as deciding that short beards look better. It's about deciding that your appearance is more important than fulfilling G-d's will.

i didn't expect anyone to make me feel guilty. I was just expecting people to want to understand what happened. Didn't you want to understand what happened to your buddy?

  17. I figured he liked how it looks shorter and I also assumed it is a sensitive personal issue. After a couple of months went by I did bring it up, but in a roundabout and non-serious way.
It's not that people don't care to understand, it's more that they don't want you to think they are judging you for your decision.

  18. That's what it is. They're scared to appear judgmental. Well, I don't know about other people, but I cut my beard because I wanted people to notice. One changes one's appearance to affect how others see him. It's all about other people seeing it and understand what's going on.

  19. So TRS is right. You're just looking for attention.

  20. not attention. increased understanding of where i'm at.

  21. A side note: If you really want to make a statement . . . cut the Zakan ha'tachton - it's a much bigger issur!

  22. what are you talking about? It's the same lo silbash (according to the tzemach tzedek)but it doesn't have the issues of bal tashchis.

v'oed v'hu ha'ikkar, the strength of the statement is not necessarily proportional to the chomer ha'issur. statement=public zakan hatchton=private.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes, but with the zakan hatachton, you're going according to many more of the shitos -it's like issur bingo! As well, who said it's private? Many a 'lubavitcher' blogger has made a carrier off of it . . .

  24. off of what? displaying his lack of pubic hair?
